Pelvic organisation

Your pelvis does not always need to stay still. Different movements ask it to organise itself differently.

What it is

Pelvic organisation describes how your pelvis sits and moves in relation to your ribs and legs. Sometimes we hold it steady; sometimes we deliberately tip, tilt or rotate it.

Why we practise it

Much of what we call 'core connection' is really about how well your pelvis and ribs relate to one another. Learning to feel and choose pelvic position gives you options rather than one fixed posture to maintain.

What to notice

  • Whether your lower back is pressed flat, arched, or somewhere in between.
  • How much effort you use to keep the pelvis still.
  • Whether one side of the pelvis feels heavier on the mat.

Common experience

Many people have been told to 'tuck' or to 'keep a neutral spine' at all times. Both are useful positions in some contexts and unhelpful in others.

Try this

Lying on your back, knees bent, slowly tip your pelvis towards a tuck and then towards a small arch, five times. Then rest halfway between and notice what that middle actually feels like today.
