Cat–Cow

The simplest conversation between breath and spine.

ExerciseFoundational3 min read4 min practice

What it is

On hands and knees, you move slowly between spinal flexion and extension, letting the breath lead.

Why we practise it

It is gentle, easy to grade, and gives immediate information about which parts of your spine are participating today.

What to notice

  • Whether the movement starts at the tail or the head.
  • Which region moves most, and which barely moves.

Try this

Do five with the breath leading, then five with the movement leading. Any difference?

Progress / modify

  • Seated on a chair if hands and knees is uncomfortable.
